The WE-SWEAT project, led by Professor Elvira Fortunato, positions NOVA FCT and i3N at the forefront of European innovation in wearable health technologies. Selected under the latest EUTOPIA call in the health domain, this initiative will develop an autonomous, non-invasive platform capable of extracting and analyzing sweat to monitor chloride and glucose levels in real time. The technology aims to support the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis and improve diabetes management through continuous, low-cost monitoring.
Combining iontophoresis, advanced microfluidics and state-of-the-art electrochemical sensors, the project will integrate all components into flexible and sustainable materials, enabling a new generation of wearable systems. This multidisciplinary approach leverages expertise in materials science, microelectronics and artificial intelligence across the consortium.
WE-SWEAT is coordinated by NOVA FCT in partnership with CY Cergy Paris Université (France) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium). The APDP – Associação Protectora dos Diabéticos de Portugal will ensure the clinical validation of the platform, strengthening its relevance for real-world health applications.
Starting on 1 January 2026, the project reinforces NOVA’s growing role in European research and contributes to advancing cutting-edge solutions in digital health and personalized diagnostics.
